Acclaimed filmmaker James Mangold is officially writing and directing the upcoming Swamp Thing movie for DC Studios. During a red carpet interview at Star Wars Celebration, Mangold revealed that he is currently working on both his Star Wars and Swamp Thing projects simultaneously.

Speaking to Collider, James Mangold expressed uncertainty about which film will come first, but confirmed that the Swamp Thing project is definitely happening. The filmmaker stated: “The truth is, I’m writing both right now, and who knows what’s going to happen and what’s gonna blossom first or second? So there’s your thing, I’m doing Swamp Thing, there’s your scoop. It’s not a rumor, it’s happening. I put it online.”

After the interview, DC Studios co-head James Gunn took to Twitter to add a few words about James Mangold’s involvement in the Swamp Thing project. Gunn wrote: “Of course when we started charting the course for the DCU one of the first people I talked to was the super talented [James Mangold] about writing and directing his passion project Swamp Thing.”

James Mangold’s involvement in the Swamp Thing project is particularly exciting, as he is known for his work on acclaimed films such as Logan, Walk the Line and Ford v Ferrari. His talent for character-driven storytelling and dynamic action sequences makes him a perfect fit for the DC Universe project, which is expected to explore the character’s origins and mythology in depth.

In May 2019, DC Universe launched a Swamp Thing series that garnered significant attention from DC Comics fans. The series, created by Gary Dauberman and Mark Verheiden, featured an all-star cast, including Andy Bean and Crystal Reed, with Derek Mears bringing Swamp Thing to life. However, the excitement was short-lived, as the project was canceled just a few months later. Despite its brief run, Swamp Thing received critical acclaim for its exceptional storytelling and impressive visual effects.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
