Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi gave an update regarding his Star Wars movie.
The last time a new Star Wars movie hit movie theaters was back in December 2019 when The Rise of Skywalker concluded the Sequel Trilogy. Since then, the franchise has mostly lived on exclusively on Disney Plus. However, film projects were still in development, including one from Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi.
No stranger to the Star Wars franchise, Taika Waititi lent his voice to IG-11 and directed the first season finale of The Mandalorian. Him signing on to write and direct a film within the franchise is an exciting prospect that producer Kathleen Kennedy acknowledged would likely be the next big screen project for the franchise.
Why is it taking so long?
Taika Waititi spoke with Screen Rant about his Star Wars project, which he is still in the process of writing. He explained why he’s been taking his time on the script, and that he’s uncertain about a release window for it:
“That’s yet to be seen. I don’t know. I’m still writing. I’m still coming up with the ideas and storylining it and just wanted to make sure that it feels like a Star Wars film.
Because, I could say, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll just write any old thing and set in space and then put Star Wars on the front. But it wouldn’t be a Star Wars film without certain elements and a certain treatment, so I’ve just got to make sure that it stays within that wheelhouse.”
Based on his comments here, it appears that Taika Waititi is aware that although he should be able to put his stamp on the franchise, Star Wars has certain elements that make it what it is. Thankfully, he’s already had experience directing within the world of The Mandalorian. Given that he’s had a proven track record with all of his films, including his Academy Award-winning film, Jojo Rabbit, he has the ability to implement all of that into the iconic galaxy far, far away with his unique sensibilities.
Here is the synopsis for Taika Waititi’s upcoming film, Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
