Director Taika Waititi hinted at X-Men villains making an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Last night, director Taika Waititi participated in a live online viewing party for Thor: Ragnarok through his official Instagram account. While the conversation throughout the evening was largely focused on Ragnarok, at one point Taika Waititi revealed the X-Men villains known as the Starsharks will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.

For those who may be unfamiliar with X-Men comics lore, the Starsharks are a group of the extra-terrestrial creatures who fly threw space. Created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum, the Spacesharks made their first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #162 and are frequently used by the alien species known as The Brood to ride into battle. The inclusion of the Spacesharks in Taika Waitit’s Thor: Love and Thunder would mark one of the first instances of X-Men characters being featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Disney acquired Fox.

Kevin Feige confirmed plans to include the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Marvel Studios’ 2019 San Diego Comic-Con presentation. However, the studio is reportedly in no rush to introduce the X-Men to the MCU, meaning it will likely be some time before we learn what else Kevin Feige has planned for the mutants.

Full details on the plot for Love and Thunder are currently under wraps, though the film will be based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, in which Jane Foster becomes the new Thor. Directed by Taika Waititi from a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale.

Thor: Love and Thunder is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on February 18, 2022.
