‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Expected To Unseat ‘X-Men’ At The Box Office

The first weekend of June is fast approaching, and it looks like it’ll be mutants vs mutants at the box office this weekend. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows debuts in theaters nationwide Thursday night and according to Deadline, it is projected to win the weekend over the Memorial Day weekend champion, X-Men: Apocalypse.

Although X-Men: Apocalypse debuted in the United States at #1, over the course of the four-day weekend it earned $79.8 million – well below the three-day haul that 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool made. Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass also opened last weekend and made roughly $33.5 million over the four-day weekend. This number is troubling for the sequel to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland which made more money on its opening day alone.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shells may be expected to take the #1 crown easily compared to X-Men and Alice, but isn’t expected to match the opening weekend of the previous entry in the franchise. The current projection according to Deadline is between $30 million -$35 million in about 4,000 theaters. In comparison, the 2014 film opened to $65.5 million in its premiere weekend.

The Turtles comes into conflict with T.C.R.I. scientist Dr. Baxter Stockman and the return of their enemy, The Shredder, who has hired Stockman to create mutants of his own in the form of Bebop and Rocksteady to even the score, during which the Turtles discover a Retro-Mutagen in hopes they can become humans. Following an extraterrestrial invasion above New York City led by the Dimension X inhabitant known as Krang. Upon Krang’s Invasion, the Turtles are joined in the fight with their Master Splinter, their human friends April O’Neil, Vern Fenwick and new friend, vigilante Casey Jones.

Directed by Dave Green and starring Megan Fox, Stephen Amell, Will Arnett, Brian Tee, Tyler Perry, Brittany Ishibashi, Laura Linney, William Ficthner, Pete Ploszek, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Tony Shaloub, Gary Anthony Williams, Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly, and Brad Garrett, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows comes to theaters June 3.

I bet it over-performs and alleviates some of the reported concern in Hollywood. I’d put the number above $40 million.
