Jim Starlin, the creator of the Marvel Comics villain Thanos, has revealed that he was nervous for Avengers: Infinity War after he saw Justice League.
Justice League featured Steppenwolf (played by Game of Thrones alum Ciaran Hinds) as the main villain. For a film that is prone to numerous criticisms from critics and fans alike, Steppenwolf is one of, if not the most, universally-criticized elements of Justice League, particularly with his lack of backstory.
After watching that film, Jim Starlin got nervous over how Avengers: Infinity War would portray the Mad Titan that he created. Starlin revealed while speaking with CinemaBlend:
“[Co-director] Joe Russo called me up like about a month before Infinity War came out and said, ‘Well, we gotta talk about all that stuff, how there was a Thanos backstory, because the movie was gonna be two and a half hours long, and they only want two hours on this one.’
I had made the mistake of watching the Justice League movie about a week before. When he told me this, I started thinking, ‘It’s going to be just like the Justice League [movie], where Thanos comes in…’ and I’m going, oh my goodness.”
Luckily, Starlin’s worries over how Avengers: Infinity War would treat his character were alleviated. Infinity War received critical acclaim, and for a franchise that was regularly criticized for its underdeveloped villains, Thanos was universally praised, particularly for his backstory and portrayal by Josh Brolin.
