The Batman’s Thursday box office cume was $21.6 million.

Bruce Wayne’s fortune is about to get a whole lot bigger. Warner Bros.’ highly-anticipated DC reboot managed to nab $21.6 million at the Thursday box office. This number includes the $2 million that was brought in from the film’s Tuesday IMAX fan preview. This puts studio expectations for opening weekend at $90 million, which industry pundits have deemed conservative. Independent trackers estimate the film will land between the $100 and $115 million range.

This is set to be the second-best opening since Spider-Man: No Way Home, which managed to become last year’s highest-grossing film. The Batman is expected to wrangle up $225 million globally this weekend, making it a viable success for Warner Bros., who are in need of a win after sending its theatrical slate to HBO Max last year.

Word of mouth for The Batman seems increasingly positive, though the film’s three-hour run-time does squander potential multiple showings. Some areas continue to hold pandemic restrictions, which nix seat capacity. It remains to be seen how well the film does, as the rest of March is quite dry on the tentpole side of things. Batman v Superman managed to bring in $27.7 million in Thursday previews back in 2016. The DC team-up film ended its theatrical run with $873 million. Will The Batman manage to defeat Zack Snyder’s second DC Extended Universe film? Only time will tell.

Here is the synopsis for The Batman:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
