A movie based on one of Ubisoft’s most recent and best-selling video games to date, Tom Clancy’s The Division, is currently in the works with Jake Gyllenhaal attached to produce and star in the project, according to Variety.
The project is still in the very early stages of development as it doesn’t even have a writer yet, but the studio is currently looking for one. It’s probably going to be a while until the movie goes into production, but Gyllenhaal’s involvement with it will likely speed things up a bit, so I’d expect more updates soon.
This isn’t Gyllenhaal’s first foray into video game movies. Back in 2010, he starred in Mike Newell’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, but that didn’t go so well. I’m guessing he’ll try not to make the same mistake with The Division. Here’s a synopsis of the game in case you’ve never heard of it:
The Division takes place in New York three weeks after a lethal virus, released on Black Friday, has swept through the city. One by one, basic services have failed. Society has collapsed into chaos. The President invokes Presidential Directive 51, and The Division, a top-secret unit of self-supporting tactical agents, is activated. Leading seemingly ordinary lives, Division agents are trained to operate independently of command in this type of emergency situation. When the lights go out, their mission begins.
