The Flash will be running into his third season in exactly one week from today as Barry Allen deals with the repercussions of saving his mother after he went back in time to save her from Reverse-Flash in the Season 2 finale. The show will be adapting one of DC Comics’ famous storylines, Flashpoint, which puts Barry in a new version of his universe after saving his mother which changed the course of history. We have been hearing quite a bit over the past few months through casting announcements and interviews what is happening in Season 3.
Today, as we are just one week away from the Season 3 premiere, we are going to go through on what we know so far about the new season of the fastest man alive. Hit the NEXT button below and let’s explore what is in store of The Flash Season 3.
#10 – The Flash Will Be Part Of The 4-Show Crossover
As announced back in mid-May this year, there is going to be a four-show crossover between The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow which has seemingly started productions on, at least the Arrow part in Vancouver, Canada. This aspect of the new season is the one that we know the least about, other than that we will be introduced to a new big bad that will only be relevant for the crossover event.
“It’s an external threat from outside the shows that will involve Supergirl coming over to The Flash, then Arrow, then Legends of Tomorrow.” – EW
In addition, while Supergirl will be part of the crossover, the event will start on The Flash. This is also the event that will address how Kara Zor-El becomes part of the bigger CW DC TV Universe as producers of Supergirl have pretty much confirmed that somehow, it will happen, but it is just about the how. Could it be Flashpoint? Universe merges? Only time will tell.
#9 – Wally West Suits Up As Kid Flash
One of the most exciting things that we are looking forward to in Season 3 is the debut of Kid Flash, as Wally West will finally be suited up, but in the Flashpoint Universe, as a starter. It has also been teased that Wally’s upbringing by Joe West has been changed due to Flashpoint, whether he now had Joe there while growing up or not, remains to be seen. On that subject, Joe isn’t necessarily aware that Wally is Kid Flash. While we will most likely see Wally as Kid Flash after Flashpoint is over, it has yet to be revealed what his relationship with The Flash will be like, but knowing this show: for fans who have been waiting to see Barry and Wally team up as speedsters, will most likely get it this year.
#8 – A Musical Crossover With Supergirl In 2017
As revealed at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, we will see for the first time in live-action superhero TV, a musical crossover between this show and Supergirl. According to Greg Berlanti, show-runner and executive producer of both shows, it will be probably episodes 13 and 14 in 2017 that the musical crossover is happening. He has been teasing that they are aiming to do at least one original song, if not more. We assume at that point that Kara and Barry will be on the same Earth after the 4-show crossover event.
#7 – Tom Felton’s Character Is A Result Of Flashpoint
Harry Potter’s own Tom Felton, who played the villainous Draco Malfoy, is joining the show this year as a big main character, Julian Albert, who might get Barry into some trouble as he doesn’t seem to be a big fan of the guy. His character description reads as followed:
“Another CSI at the Central City Police Department who has suspicions about Barry Allen. He is also Barry’s slightly older, slightly geekier contemporary, a guy who is as smart as he is intuitive. As such, this newcomer doesn’t buy Barry’s nice guy routine and sets out to learn what he’s hiding — all while concealing some secrets of his own.”
That is all that is known so far about Julian as producers have been keeping details under wraps. Could Julian possibly be more than just a rival of Barry’s at CCPD? We will get back to that later.
#6 – New Rogues Are Coming & Returning Rogues
Over the course of the past two seasons, we have been introduced to several of the famous Rogues from The Flash mythology and this year, we are going to meet a lot of them. As previously announced, Joey King, Grey Damon and Ashley Rickards have all been cast as Magenta, Mirror Master and The Top respectively. Magenta will appear in episode 3 while the Mirror Master and Top will both be in episode 4, which will also feature the return of Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold. In case you missed it, here are the character descriptions for the three new characters:
Magenta – “A teen with a troubled past, Frances “Frankie” Kane is a meta-human with the ability to control metal… but her powers come with a dangerous side-effect, causing her villainous alter ego known as Magenta to emerge.”
Mirror Master – “One of the Flash’s most infamous Rogues, Sam Scudder — aka Mirror Master — is a smooth criminal with a huge ego. Upon discovering he now has the power to travel through any reflective surface, Scudder embarks on a massive crime spree to prove himself the greatest thief that Central City has ever seen.”
The Top – “Rickards will play Rosalind “Rosa” Dillon, a.k.a. The Top, in the fourth episode of The Flash‘s third season. The Top, which was a male character in the comic books, has the power to make people’s heads spin. She’s the Bonnie to Mirror Master’s Clyde and one of the most dangerous members of the gallery of Rogues.”
Might we see the formation of the Rogues later this season? Anything is possible with this show and given the fact that they will have introduced almost every Rogue member by episode 4, you figure that at some point, they will all come together to take on the fastest man alive together.
#5 – A Two-Episode Gorilla City Arc Set To Happen
In Season 2 of the show, we saw that Gorilla Grodd got transported to a very significant place in Earth-2 that was revealed to be Gorilla City, something that hardcore Flash and Grodd fans should be familiar with. As confirmed by Andrew Kreisberg, show-runner and executive producer, we will be getting two episodes this year where we will see our Flash characters visit Gorilla City. It has yet to be revealed when that arc will take place, but if you are a Gorilla Grodd fan, keep an eye out for those two episodes which at this point will probably be taking place in the second half of the season.
#4 – Doctor Alchemy And Savitar Are The Big Bads
While we haven’t learned much about them, we do know that Barry will be facing not one, but two big baddies this season as the show will be introducing Doctor Alchemy and the evil speedster Savitar in Season 3. The trailer from Comic-Con gave us a quick glimpse at Alchemy who you can expect to see at least in the seventh episode (directed by Kevin Smith) as his next appearance, although we should probably see him again before 3.07. Todd Helbing, one of the executive producers, teased during an interview with IGN, that Savitar (who has been described as a psychological threat) and Alchemy might be on the same side:
“I’ll just say that Dr. Alchemy’s plan and Savitar’s plan are not much different.”
On a side note: while we don’t know who is underneath that mask, Doctor Alchemy’s comic book name is Albert Desmond and Tom Felton’s character (who is a result out of Flashpoint) is named Julian Albert. Given that Julian is going to be butting heads with Barry at CCPD, as well as what his last name is: I’m betting my money on Julian being Doctor Alchemy.
#3 – Killer Frost Returns (Or Debuts?)
When Kevin Smith tweeted out the front page of the 3.07 script, it was see-through and it was revealed that episode 7 will in fact be titled “Killer Frost”. With Caitlin Snow, we haven’t heard much on what is happening with her this season, obviously because we have yet to see the premiere and what her Flashpoint status is. Other than her mom being introduced, it has been very hush-hush. However, given that Caitlin is Killer Frost in the comics, and that we have seen her Earth-2 dopplegänger (sadly now dead) suit up as the famous villain, this is going to be quite an important episode for our Earth-1 Caitlin. Could the show however possibly introduce Crystal Frost or Louise Lincoln, the two Killer Frosts that came before Caitlin in the comics, and be what causes Caitlin to become the famous ice villain? Or will Flashpoint reveal that our Caitlin has been given powers through an event like the particle accelerator explosion? Maybe Caitlin’s somewhat troubling mother will have something to do with it? However they do it, something tells us that this will be quite an an trans-formative episode, in one way or another..
#2 – Barry & Iris Will Take Big Steps In Their Relationship
Despite that in the Flashpoint Universe, Iris doesn’t know Barry (based on trailers), it’s not going to be a stop for the ace reporter and the scarlet speedster as they will be taking the next step in their relationship. The Season 2 finale featured Barry and Iris kissing each other before he ran back in time and despite of that, we will see the two iconic characters head down that path this season. During a Comic-Con round table interview with the Helbing brothers, when asked about what Barry/Iris fans can look forward to the “WestAllen” relationship this season, they said the following:
“This season you are going to see a lot of Barry and Iris. A lot of them together. It’s great!”
Given how much Season 2 spent with establishing how Iris is Barry’s true lightning rod, this year seems like the perfect time to go deeper into their relationship, as it gets more romantic. So for any of you that are big fans of Barry and Iris (including this reporter), this will definitely be Iris and Barry’s year.
#1 – Flashpoint Will Affect The CW DC TV Universe
Just like in the comics, Flashpoint will be a game-changer, but not just for this show as it has been confirmed that this arc will have certain effects on the other CW DC shows. With Arrow, it seems that the character that will be most affected by it, is John Diggle. Maybe Flashpoint is what brings Captain Cold back from the dead after his sacrifice in Legends of Tomorrow. What we know about this arc on this particular show is that while it won’t last the whole season, we will see permanent effects throughout the rest of the series as well as the universe. While some things will probably revert back to status quo (like Cisco going back to being an engineer, the Allen parents not being alive and more), it does seem that history in the show will be re-written to some degree.
While we haven’t heard anything about Tom Cavanagh’s arc this season, it has been majorly teased that he will be playing a different Harrison Wells again, as opposed to Earth-2 Harry. Might we finally get to meet the Earth-1 Harrison after all this time? In terms of affecting the larger DC TV Universe, it wouldn’t be surprising if Flashpoint either is directly responsible or partly responsible for merging certain Earths together, like Earth-2 and Supergirl’s Earth as she is moving to The CW this year. Either way, even if Flashpoint will maybe just last for a few episodes, we should expect changes across all the shows, in different capacities.
