Barry Jenkins’ upcoming prequel to The Lion King has cast Aaron Pierre as Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Scar.
In 2019, Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King met with a mixed reception from fans and critics but still became one of the year’s biggest moneymakers. The film would go on to earn well over $1.6B worldwide on a $240M budget, becoming the second highest-grossing film of the year. Disney was quick to greenlight another project based around the property which would come together as a prequel directed by Barry Jenkins.
The Lion King prequel was first revealed back in September of 2020 and no a whole lot has been heard about it since. Now it has been revealed that the upcoming film has found its leads. According to a new report, Barry Jenkins’ upcoming film has added Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrsion Jr. as the younger versions of Mufasa and Scar. The story of the upcoming film is currently unknown.

Director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy, and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.
Directed by Jon Favreau, Disney’s The Lion King features the voices talents of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner as Timon.
