Disney has released the first trailer for the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey as Ariel.

On Friday, Walt Disney Studios took the stage at D23 in Anaheim to preview their upcoming slate of live-action films, which largely consists of remakes reimagining their animated classics. One of the most anticipated live-action remakes in the pipeline is The Little Mermaid, which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel.

Under the Sea…

During the presentation, Disney unveiled the first look at The Little Mermaid remake, which has now been released online. The teaser trailer features stunning underwater visuals similar to what we’ve seen in Aquaman and offers our first proper look at Halle Bailey as Ariel. You can watch the first trailer below.

Here is the synopsis of the upcoming film:

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

Directed by Rob Marshall from a script written by David Magee, Disney’s The Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as the villainous sea witch Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian the Crab, and Academy Award winner Javier Bardem as King Triton.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken will write new songs for the remake to be included alongside the classic tunes the latter penned for the animated version of The Little Mermaid. In addition to his duties as a songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as an executive producer alongside Rob Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.

The Little Mermaid will hit theaters on May 26, 2023. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news coming out of D23 this weekend, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
