Disney has announced an official release date for the highly-anticipated Star Wars movie The Mandalorian & Grogu, setting its premiere for May 22, 2026. This confirmation puts to rest any speculation about the film’s debut, marking a big screen return for the Star Wars saga for the first time since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
The announcement was part of a broader reshuffling of Disney’s release calendar, which also included adjustments to other major titles. Among these changes, Disney has decided to push back the release of Dwayne Johnson’s live-action remake of Moana by a year, now scheduled for July 10, 2026, to avoid overlapping with Moana 2, set to open this November.
Additionally, Disney has revealed the return of two beloved characters, Woody and Buzz Lightyear, in Pixar’s Toy Story 5, which will hit theaters on June 19, 2016. The Jared Leto-led Tron: Ares is slated for October 10, 2025.
What to expect from The Mandalorian and Grogu movie
The Mandalorian producer Jon Favreau previously expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming spin-off movie. “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” he said. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
With its high-quality production, engaging storylines, and captivating characters, The Mandalorian has proven to be one of the best Disney Plus series to date. While the series hasn’t been officially renewed yet, Din Djarin and Grogu’s story are also expected to continue on the small screen.
The Mandalorian features Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog, Omid Abtahi, Taika Waititi, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Temuera Morrison and Katee Sackhoff, among others. The series was created by Jon Favreau and executive produced by Dave Filoni, with episodes directed by Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Peyton Reed, Carl Weathers and Robert Rodriguez.
