New ‘The Marvels’ Synopsis Teases ‘WandaVision’ Connections

The stakes rise!

Monica Rambeau WandaVision Doctor Strange The Marvels Teyonah Parris Captain Marvel

Marvel Studios has given fans a glimpse of what to expect from its upcoming Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels. Following the release of the first trailer for the movie, Marvel dropped a synopsis that reveals that Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, who was last seen in WandaVision, will be playing a key role opposite Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan.

According to the synopsis, Monica Rambeau has been promoted to astronaut following her mission with SWORD in WandaVision. She’s also now confirmed to be working with a brand-new entity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe called SABER.

“In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” reads the synopsis. “But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

Monica Rambeau’s promotion to astronaut is also an exciting development for her character. Fans will recall that Rambeau played a pivotal role in WandaVision, where she worked with SWORD to investigate the Hex, which was created by Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff.

The talent behind the Captain Marvel sequel

The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. DaCosta is the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios film, adding an extra layer of diversity and representation to the production.

In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe offering.

The Marvels features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur. The movie also features the return of Nick Fury, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising the role after his six-episode Disney Plus series Secret Invasion.
