Disney’s The Marvels trailer has been hit with a wave of backlash from fans who have made it the most-disliked MCU teaser on YouTube. The trailer generated a staggering 7.6 million views in just 11 hours, but also received a whopping 214,000 dislikes, compared to 318,000 likes.
As of last night, Disney’s The Marvels trailer had received a total of 401,000 likes, but the number of dislikes had also increased to 365,000, indicating that the anger among fans is not subsiding anytime soon. As the dislikes piled up, social media was abuzz with speculation about why the Marvels trailer was receiving so much hate. Some pointed to the ongoing controversy surrounding Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel casting and the fact that the movie features three female leads, making it a target for online trolls.
Set to hit theaters on November 10, 2023, The Marvels features the return of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, who made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the 2019 movie of the same name. She was last seen in the cryptic post-credits scenes of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel.
Joining Brie Larson in the cast are Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, who first appeared as a child in Captain Marvel and grew up to be a powerful superhero in her own right in the Disney Plus series WandaVision, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, a teenage superhero who was introduced in Ms. Marvel.
The talent behind the Captain Marvel sequel
The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. DaCosta is the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios film, adding an extra layer of diversity and representation to the production.
In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
“In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence,” reads an official synopsis for the movie. “But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”
The Marvels features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur. The movie also features the return of Nick Fury, with Samuel L. Jackson reprising the role after his six-episode Disney Plus series Secret Invasion.
