The Russos On Balancing The Large Number Of Characters Appearing In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Not long ago, The Russos made headlines when they stated that the upcoming two-part Avengers: Infinity War would feature “67 characters”. However, following that statement the directing duo stated that they were being figurative when it came to that number. Well, it seems that there either might have been some truth to that or the pair are just messing with fans.

While speaking at Wizard World New Cleveland Comic Con earlier today and updated the number of different characters that will appear in the film. Cleveland.com reported the following from their panel.

The Russos also took a moment during the panel to correct a mistake they made earlier this year when describing the plot to the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, which they are on board to direct. The movie features 68 distinct characters, not 67.

While it’s highly likely that they were joking around with the fans in attendance due to the previous statement, there’s no doubt that fans will be pleased with the number of characters that will be appearing in the highly-anticipated film. The directors definitely are going to have their hands full with this task of balancing so many characters and Joe Russo commented on the subject.

We have to tell a story and that story has to be built around the characters’ emotional arcs. And we can only have so many of those.

It seems that rather than fleshing out each individual character in the film, we’ll see a focus on a handful of characters with a number of others playing ancillary roles. While they’ve seemingly denied this in the past, could some of these characters end up being some of those we’ve met in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the members of The Defenders? Only time will tell on this one but fingers are crossed. Remember…it’s all connected. Let us know what you think about The Russos’ comments in the section below.
