The Walking Dead producers have offered a healthy update on what’s happening with the upcoming Rick Grimes film.
The Walking Dead has become a media empire in the last decade with its hands in almost every medium. Now, the prolific franchise has its eyes set on producing its first feature film, which is set to focus on Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, who bowed out of the AMC series in its ninth season. Revealed in 2018, the Rick Grimes film is set to be the first in a trilogy that doubles as a fitting send off to the beloved character. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic halted production on The Walking Dead sequel movie. While fans might be worried that the project is stalled, The Walking Dead producer and creator Robert Kirkman has offered an update on the Rick Grimes film.
During this weekend’s Skybound Xpo panel, Skybound co-founder Robert Kirkman discussed how the COVID-19 film has inadvertently made the project better.
“There’s tons of stuff going on behind the scenes. I don’t want anyone to think that we’re just kind of waiting around for this pandemic to end. I would say that, if anything, the pandemic is going to make a lot of movies better. I think the Rick Grimes movie chief among them, just because we’re getting a lot more time to cook this thing and make sure it’s perfect. But when things do quiet down, you guys are going to hear a ton more about this movie.”
David Alpert, another producer on The Walking Dead and the co-founder of Skybound Entertainment, had similarly positive things to say regarding the Rick Grimes movie.
“We’re coming along in a big way. We’re just in this particular space where we have [to wait]. We can’t shoot right now, so that’s just the big thing holding us back.”
Alpert continued by teasing the big plans he and the The Walking Dead team have in store for fans.
“We are desperate to get back into production, and get everything going but we have something really exciting, really unique, really different, and can’t wait to get it going. We just have to wait for it to be safe.”
Both producers seem to be wholly confident in the Rick Grimes movie, especially considering that dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic has become an uphill battle for almost every entertainment company. Kirkman particularly exudes confidence by telling fans that the longer wait for the project will result in a better product. Unfortunately, there’s no telling when the Rick Grimes project will be released as the situation regarding the pandemic is rapidly shifting stateside.
