The Witcher returns in Summer 2023.

The Witcher Henry Cavill Geralt Netflix

The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich promises that Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia is getting a heroic send-off from the Netflix series.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced that Henry Cavill is stepping down from his role as Geralt of Rivia after the third season of The Witcher. However, The Witcher has been renewed for a fourth season, with Australian actor Liam Hemsworth replacing Cavill as the fan-favorite character. In a recent interview, The Witcher boss Lauren Schmidt Hissrich opened up about Cavill’s departure.

“Henry has given so much to the show and so we want to honor that appropriately,” the Witcher showrunner told Entertainment Weekly. “What is so interesting is that season three, to me, is the closest thing that we’ve done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books. Obviously, we can’t do every page, but Time of Contempt gave us so many big action events, plot points, defining character moments, huge reveals of a big bad. There’s so much to do that we were able to stick really, really closely with the books.”

The future of Geralt of Rivia

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich went on to add the following about Geralt’s The Witcher season four arc: “Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri. And to me, it’s the most heroic sendoff that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that. Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in Season 4. He’s a slightly different Geralt than we expected. Now, by the way, that’s an understatement.”

Last week, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich revealed that The Witcher season three premiere is titled “Shaerrawedd,” a reference to an iconic Elven-location from the Witcher books. Stephen Surjik is directing the episode, working from a script by Mike Ostrowski. It’s scheduled to premire sometime in Summer 2023 on Netflix.

The first two seasons of The Witcher are currently available to stream on Netlfix. Based on the series of books by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and developed for television by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, The Witcher also stars Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan and Joey Batey.
