Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to have a massive weekend at the box office, just not as big as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The domestic box office appears to be back to where it once was given the recent success of The Batman, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Top Gun: Maverick, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and others. Thor: Love and Thunder is the next major release, and Deadline predicts the Marvel film will open to around $140-160 million domestically and another $150 million overseas.
Will Thor Catch Doctor Strange?
Thor: Love and Thunder‘s current projections mark the film’s opening just shy of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Doctor Strange sequel has earned the best opening weekend figure with $185 million to date in 2022. Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick is the highest-grossing film of the year and the only 2022 film to gross a billion dollars.
Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
