New set images from Thor: Love and Thunder hint at a renewed romance between Chris Hemsworth’s character and Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster.
Thor: The Dark World is considered by many to be one of, if not THE, lowest point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before Eternals, Thor: The Dark World had the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of 66%, grossing under $650M worldwide. Almost as in response to this reception, Thor: Ragnarok was a film that took a completely different direction with more focus on humor, colorful images and impactful dramatic scenes to top everything off. It was one of the last times that several of the actors would have a major role in an MCU production.
Stellan Skarsgård would appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron but then seemingly exited from the MCU. Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis likewise disappeared from the shared movie universe until reprising the role for WandaVision. The biggest absence, however, was Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster.
Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster was always something of an intermediate presence in the MCU. In both Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron she is mentioned but never appears on camera. Thor: Ragnarok casually mentions the character and that they had opted to end their relationship for unknown reasons. Then in 2019, it was revealed that not only would Natalie Portman return to the franchise but would also wield Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, and would take its primary inspiration from Jason Aaron’s run on the Thor comics.
Over the past few days, a number of images from the set of Thor: Love and Thunder have shown Thor back in shape and interacting with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster. It’s not entirely clear if the images are from a flashback sequence as Thor is in shape and seems to have a hairstyle from a deleted scene in Thor: The Dark World. Yesterday a new set of images from the film were released showing us what could either be another flashback sequence or the two characters possibly on a date.
