Australian arts minister Paul Fletcher and Marvel’s vice president David Grant announced Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Love and Thunder will begin filming in Sydney, Australia, once Shang-Chi wraps production.

During Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige confirmed plans for Thor: Love and Thunder and Shang-Chi as part of their Phase 4 lineup. Now, Marvel has confirmed Thor: Love and Thunder will begin pre-production in March 2020 before filming at Fox Studios Australia in August of the same year, right after Shang-Chi concludes production at the same location.

The Australian and NSW governments provided over $16.7 million (AUS$24.1 million) in incentives to bring production on Thor: Love and Thunder to Sydney while Marvel is expected to invest $178 million into the local economy. Marvel’s vice president David Grant made the following statement on the benefits of filming Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Love and Thunder and Shang-Chi back-to-back:

“Following the recently announced Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios is pleased to announce our third tentpole feature to be produced in Australia and follows our highly positive experience from Thor: Ragnarok. Shooting Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsand Thor: Love and Thunder back-to-back will provide local crews with sustained, continuous employment opportunities. We will be working with local educational institutions in creating internship opportunities and would like to thank the Federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher and the New South Wales Arts Minister Don Harwin for their invaluable support.”

While Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame was touted as the final outing for several long-time actors whose contracts were set to expire, Thor: Ragnarok breathed new life into the God of Thunder’s film series and fans were eager to see Chris Hemsworth reprise the role with his new comedic take on the character. Now, Chris Hemsworth has made the following comments to local media outlets on his excitement to return for a new Thor film:

“It’s an interesting feeling after Endgame because it was like, where do you go from there, but it’s about making great films and to still be a part of the Marvel/Disney family and to be able to make another film is fantastic.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung. In the comics, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist embarking on a mission to take down the criminal empire of his father, Fu Manchu.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder feature a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Natalie Portman. The film will be based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, with Portman’s Jane Foster set to become the new Thor.

Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings will be released in theaters on February 12, 2021, and Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in theaters on November 5, 2021.
