Creed star Tessa Thompson (Dear White People, Selma, HBO’s upcoming Westworld) continues her meteoric rise with news that she’s been cast in Thor: Ragnarok as the Norse god’s new love interest. The role is described as “kind of a superhero” (this basically means she has powers) and will span multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
After wrapping the oft-delayed production on the first season of Westworld (she’s a series regular), Thompson will first film Alex Garland’s directorial follow-up to Ex Machina, Annihilation with Thor co-star Natalie Portman (although given Thompson’s role is described as “love interest,” it’s looking less and less likely that Portman will actually be returning* for Ragnarok, which is said to be set primarily on Asgard and in space) before transitioning to the Ragnarok at the end of July.
*UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter confirms Portman is not a part of Thor: Ragnarok. I’m not really broken up about it.
Marvel brought on Taika Waititi, a quirky character-driven director, to add levity to this installment, which given its subtitle portends apocalypse for the Nine Realms. After Thor: The Dark World disappointed creatively, it’s been rumored the movie is meant to redeem Chris Hemsworth’s hero a little bit while also acting as The Winter Soldier of Phase 3 by bringing seismic shifts to the MCU.
Thompson joins Cate Blanchett as the newest additions to the third Thor film, which also features the return of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner aka Hulk. The Asgardian regulars, from Loki to Odin to Sif to the Warriors Three, are also expected to return. If I had to hazard a guess as to the pair of newcomers roles, I’d peg Thompson for a remix of Bruunhilde aka Valkyrie and Blanchett for the Big Bad Hela, goddess of the dead. Add Amora the Enchantress as Loki’s love interest and that would be three badass broads joining this movie, which would go a long way to reinvesting me in this franchise.
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3, 2017.
