‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Karl Urban Reflects On Experience During Production

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is shaping up to be one of the most unique films within the modern age of superheroes. Sure, James Gunn’s two volumes of Guardians of the Galaxy have had their share of quirkiness, but director Taika Waititi seems to be bringing something so radically different from anything else the Marvel Cinematic Universe has shown before – much of which is thanks to new cast members that include Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban.

Urban already has some credibility within the geek community. He is famous for his role as Dr. Leonard McCoy/Bones in the rebooted Star Trek films as well as his performance in the criminally underappreciated Dredd.

Now, Urban has joined his fellow Star Trek co-star Zoe Saldana in having a role within the MCU. In Ragnarok, Urban plays Skurge and spends much of his screentime alongside Blanchett’s villainous Hela.

Urban appeared at San Diego Comic-Con for Marvel’s panel at Hall H. Urban revealed that he had an incredible time working with the cast and Waititi on the film:

Well, I guess there’s nothing sacred in a take when you work with Taika and I like that. He’s not so precious about it and he would throw you directions or lines and it was a very fluid and collaborative process. It was a lot of fun. Unlike anything I’d ever done before. So much fun. Laughing so much. Yeah.

Urban also hinted at what Skurge’s journey in the film will be like:

Primarily, in this film, I spend most of the time paired up with Cate Blanchett and her character Hela. And once she turns up, my character Skurge really has a decision to make and it’s about survival. It’s either join her or die. And he’s not the brightest tool in the shed, but he’s bright enough to know what he has to do to survive, which is interesting because once you make a deal with the devil, then you got to pay the man. And that’s the story of Skurge.

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok“, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladictorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson,  Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.

5 Best Marvel Cinematic Universe Villains So Far

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a branching property. With its stories being told across film and television this juggernaut of a franchise has introduced many characters throughout the years, including superheroes, side characters and anti-heroes, but some of the most interesting are certainly the villains.

Villains are important to give the hero someone to face and to allow them to be heroic, but they should also be their own characters. They shouldn’t exist solely for the hero, but on their own terms. While the MCU has had some bumps along the road when it comes to villains there have been a few that have really shined as unique and interesting.

Here are the 5 best villains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. This list contains spoilers. Click Next to continue.
