Todd Phillips is officially developing more DC origin stories for Warner Bros. after he tackles the sequel to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.
With the recent news that Todd Phillips is in talks to direct a sequel to the wildly successful Joker, the director will also be taking on more DC origin stories for Warner Bros. Joker is the fourth DC film to make $1 billion at the box office and since Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips had already discussed the possibility of a sequel when filming Joker, it isn’t surprising that Warner bros. are keen to follow up the success of the DC origin story.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Todd Phillips is in talks for a Joker sequel as well as other DC origin stories. The huge success of Joker will already bring director Todd Phillips $100 million, so it’ll be interesting what his payday is for future DC origin stories. But more importantly the question is which DC villain will get an origin story next, one character that might fit the tone of Todd Phillips’ Joker is Lex Luthor – but perhaps without the exploration of mental health and the failure of the system.
Which DC villain would you like to see Todd Phillips tackle after Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker sequel? What do you want to see from the Joker sequel? Tell us in the comments!
Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
Director Todd Phillips’ Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. The movie is not part of the DC Extended Universe, and seems to play into Warner Bros.’s interests of making creator-driven superhero movies over necessarily building a hyper-connected shared universe… At least for the time being.
Joker is now playing in theaters. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Todd Phillips and future DC origin stories!
