Paramount revealed raw footage from Mission: Impossible – Fallout tonight at CinemaCon.
The sixth installment of the long-running franchise film finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team dealing with the fallout of a mission gone wrong. Just over a year ago, Skydance Media CEO David Ellison revealed that Cruise had spent a year training for a stunt in the upcoming film and tonight we learned just what that stunt was and where it was filmed.
During Paramount’s presentation, it was revealed that the film would feature an intense skydiving stunt that would see Tom Cruise fall from a height so high that the actor would require oxygen. The crew built what they claim is the largest wind tunnel in the world to rehearse the sequence. They also build an oxygen helmet for Cruise which was tested by the Royal Air Force.
The film’s director Christopher McQuarrie — who returns after directing the previous installment of the franchise, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation — dished on how far they pushed the limit with the skydiving stunt:
“We had to decide how much we could do that is physically possible without killing Tom. One of the requests that Tom made was that he not catch on fire.
Tom Cruise revealed that it was extremely difficult to find somewhere that would allow them to film this sequence, revealing they ultimately landed on the United Arab Emirates:
“We wouldn’t have been allowed to do this anywhere else. They were very helpful.”
Raw footage from the sequence was also revealed during the presentation, revealing Tom Cruise actually catches franchise newcomer Henry Cavill in the sequence.
Tom Cruise reveals it took 106 leaps to get just three usable takes of his #MissionImpossibleFallout skydive sequence with Henry Cavill. We saw the raw takes. Incredible filmmaking and stuntwork. He's a legend. #CinemaCon

Just watched a clip of Tom Cruise falling out of a plane at Halo jump heights, carrying out a choreographed scene, and catching Henry Cavill. Unreal.

The scene finds Hunt and Henry’s Cavill in plane. Cavill disconnects his oxygen, jumps and leaves Hunt to scramble to put it back. Hunt then jumps chasing Cavill’s character. #CinemaCon
