Paramount Pictures has pushed back the release date of the Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun: Maverick to December 2020.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has prompted governments around the world to order non-essential businesses to close in hopes of slowing the spread of the virus. As a result, movie theaters have closed their doors and studios have shut down or postponed multiple productions in addition to delaying the release of their summer 2020 projects.

Now, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick has become the latest summer 2020 film to push back its release date due to the coronavirus pandemic. Originally scheduled to be released in theaters on June 24, 2020, Top Gun: Maverick will now debut on December 23 of this year.

As Variety notes, studios evidently don’t expect movie theaters to re-open by summer and are unsure if audiences will even be willing to flock to cinemas right away should the coronavirus pandemic subside sooner than later. With a budget of $150 million, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick would require massive tickets sales in order to turn out a profit for Paramount Pictures.

Here is the official synopsis for Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Peter Craig, Justin Marks, Ashley Edward Miller, and Zack Stentz, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.

Top Gun: Maverick will be released in theaters on December 23, 2020.
