Tom Hardy discussed what a third Venom film would need to do in terms of raising the stakes.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is finally hitting cinemas in the first week of October and months of delays. Directed by Andy Serkis, who has previously lent his talents to starring as Gollum in Lord of the Rings, the Tom Hardy sequel introduces Carnage into the fold. Carnage stands as one of Marvel’s most terrifying villains, and from the footage we’ve seen of the film, it looks like Woody Harrelson’s take on the demonic symbiote will be true to the source material.

As Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s press tour continues, many have been asking Tom Hardy and director Andy Serkis what the plan is for the future of the franchise. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight Canada, Tom Hardy candidly discussed the inner working of the Venom franchise, bringing up how each film needs to raise the stakes.

“With these things that come in threes at the moment, and if they progress further, then it’s normally the initial blocking of the infrastructure or a set of franchise movies will be one, two, and three, and done. So, when Venom 1 was presented, it was presented, if it was successful, with the two, and if that was successful, with the three. So one has to look at the whole overarching option.”

“First, you establish a character. If people like it, then you take them on a journey. Obviously, Carnage, he’s a high priest in that aspect in the arcana of the characters. It’s like ‘Wow, you’ve got to go bigger,’ or you go lateral and build the world you continue to unpack.”

So what exactly is next for Venom should there be a third film in the franchise? Potentially Spider-Man. Tom Hardy discussed how a Venom-Verse exists alongside a Spider-Verse, which means fans can look forward to unexpected characters popping up in the film to cap off the Venom trilogy. Even if Spider-Man doesn’t pop up in a third film, it’s certain that the film will have to top Carnage.

Here is the synopsis for Sony’s first Venom film:

The evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character – Venom! Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancée. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom. Will these powers be enough for this new lethal protector to defeat great evil forces, especially against the far stronger and more weaponized symbiote rival, Riot?

Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.

Venom is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Let There Be Carnage will hit theaters on October 1. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the franchise’s future, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
