Spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home not only succeeded as an homage to the enduring cinematic legacy of the character but also operated as a fitting emotional finale for the Marvel trilogy. The Spidey threequel saw some major changes to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker that have fundamentally changed the iteration of the character. One of the biggest moments in the film was when Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May perished at the hands of Green Goblin’s glider.

The tragic moment forced Peter Parker to reckon with his actions and to ultimately move forward with his intention to cure the film’s villains, as Aunt May would have wanted. Speaking with Marvel.com, Tom Holland opened up about the importance of the scene and how crucial Peter and Aunt May’s relationship is.

“The relationship between Peter and May throughout these films has been really integral to the heart and soul of the story. This scene kind of seemingly comes out of the blue, like no one expects this to happen. It’s going to be really, really hard hitting for people [seeing the] movie.”

MJ star Zendaya continued by highlighting just how integral Aunt May was to Peter’s character and how she influenced him as a mentor.

“[May’s] a great role model. She’s raised a lovely young man, and she’s done it on her own. She doesn’t get the credit she deserves. It’s important to acknowledge May in the respect that everybody is like, ‘Oh, he always has to have a mentor,’ All these father figures and all this stuff. But May has raised him. Shoutout to May!”

Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
