‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops ‘Doctor Strange 2’ As Highest-Grossing Film Of 2022

Maverick soars above Doctor Strange!

Top Gun Maverick Doctor Strange 2

Top Gun: Maverick has surpassed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the highest grossing film in the US for 2022.

After a rough few years, 2022 has been shaping up to be an incredible one for Paramount Pictures. With a couple of successful movies under their belt, perhaps their victory lap as we reach near the halfway point is the incredible success of Top Gun: Maverick. The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 film starring Tom Cruise in one of his most iconic roles has been subject to universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and has been the summer’s most intriguing box office success story. So much so, that it’s even soared over the heights of the current biggest film franchise in the world, the Marvel Cinematic Universe – particularly with its new film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Doctor Strange sequel opened with 2022’s biggest debut weekend at the box office, but dropped significantly in its second weekend. While that’s to be expected for a big film filled to the brim with secrecy and hype, the sustained success of Top Gun: Maverick can likely be attributed to enthusiastic word-of-mouth. So much so, that it’s also surpassed the latest MCU film as the highest-grossing film domestically this year, grossing $422.2 million in the US alone, along with $384.2 million globally, now putting the film at $806.4 million worldwide.

Will it surpass Doctor Strange 2 globally?

As of right now, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sits globally at $935.2 million. Not too shabby for a sequel to the 2016 origin story. Although Top Gun: Maverick currently sits roughly $130 million behind it at this moment, it’s not impossible. After all, the film is having near-unprecedented legs at the box office, something that the newest MCU film has surprisingly have had less of, especially when compared to the behemoth that was Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Here is the synopsis for Tom Cruise’s sequel:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, based on a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.

Both Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the Tom Cruise film and the MCU, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
