Tyler Hoechlin Talks Wearing The ‘Superman’ Suit

Tyler Hoechlin Superman

Superman has one of the most iconic costumes in comic book history. Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve, Tom Welling and many others have all worn the suit and next up will be Tyler Hoechlin on season two of Supergirl. Hoechlin has been getting into the role and recently tried on the suit, which turned out to be a major challenge.

Hoechlin recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and described the process of becoming Superman:

“The first couple of times it definitely took longer to get into. I started to think that Superman’s greatest power was actually being able to just jump into [the suit] as quickly as he does, because it’s not quite as smooth the first couple of times you do it…It’s kind of like putting on a wetsuit. I’ve introduced an old surfing trick, so if put a plastic bag over my feet and hands when I put it on, that seems to cut down a little bit of time, so that’s been helpful in the process.”

Despite the initial challenges with the outfit, Hoechlin described the experience as surreal. Hoechlin is set to appear in the first two episodes of season two.

“It’s one of those things where you put it on, and it’s the nicest Halloween costume you’ve ever worn. Then, once you step on set, it becomes something different because people actually start addressing you as Superman. You’re in the scenes, and people are playing along that you are Superman, so that’s when it really hits you for a second. You have to then believe that you are this person, and just really own it and roll with it. That was really the moment that it hit closest to home.”

Here’s the synopsis for Supergirl season two:

“Now, in Season Two, Kara has left the safety of being Cat Grant’s assistant in order to figure out what she really wants to do, while as Supergirl she continues to work at the DEO., protecting the citizens of National City and searching for Jeremiah and Cadmus. Along the way, she will team up with Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to battle new villains, as she strives to balance her personal life with her life as a superhero.

Distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, SUPERGIRL is executive produced by Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash”), Ali Adler (“The New Normal”), Andrew Kreisberg (“The Flash,” “Arrow”) and Sarah Schechter (“Blindspot,” “The Mysteries of Laura”). Supergirl is based on the characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and appearing in DC Comics, by special arrangement with the Jerry Siegel Family.”

Supergirl Season 2 premieres on Monday, October 10 at 8/7c on The CW.

To be fair, the actual suit Supes wears is just spandex as an aura that he emits(which also protects those he carries) extends out far enough to protect the flimsy material. His cape is too far outside this aura which is why it’s much easier to damage in the comics.

The new 52 version is a kryptonian light armor, while the DCEU version is a straight on Kryptonian body suit which is very sturdy. Post crisis had the superman suit made from a very tough material that Martha had made with great difficulty. Rebirth superman also wears the kryptonian-inspired light armor.

Superman suit had a lot of different iterations.

Very true, and I loved the New 52 version the best.

Correction – Tom Welling has never ever worn the suit. Not even in the finale. A disappointing decision in my opinion. The finale deserved to see Welling in the suit! Especially after a 10 year build up, and a full season of them teasing the actual suit.
