‘Morbius’ Star Tyrese Gibson Confuses Everyone As He Campaigns For Blade

Who's going to tell him?

Tyrese Gibson Marvel Blade

Tyrese Gibson, who already grappled with one Marvel vampire in Morbius, is apparently hungry for more as he shared his bid to play Blade.

In an Instagram post, Tyrese Gibson shared an image of himself along with a panel from an Avengers comic depicting Marvel’s Daywalker, Blade. Gibson captioned the image “We on!!!!!!!!!!!!!”, quickly leading to a whole lot of confusion. A few commenters asked whether Gibson would be playing Blade, while others expressed approval or disapproval for the casting suggestion. The post appeared to suggest Gibson is due to play the iconic vampire hunter, but there was one problem – Mahershala Ali is currently playing Blade in the MCU.

Mahershala Ali’s casting as Blade was announced by Marvel Studios at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. While the MCU’s Blade does not yet have a release date, the film is expected to enter production this summer. Wesley Snipes famously appeared as the half-human half-vampire character in the previous Blade film franchise. Although Ali is yet to make his first true appearance as Blade, he had a small voice-only role in the post-credits scene of last year’s Eternals, warning Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman against taking up the Ebony Blade.

Tyrese Gibson, then, is unlikely to be playing Blade anytime soon, but that’s not stopping him from campaigning for the role. Check out his post below:

Blade will be directed by Bassam Tariq, who is co-writing the film with Stacy Osei-Kuffour. Production will begin later this year.

Mahershala Ali’s Blade last appeared in Eternals. Here is the synopsis for the film:

The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.

Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Harry Styles as Starfox, and Mahershala Ali as Blade.
