Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer has opened up on how the upcoming Tom Holland film is different from the game.

The release date for Tom Holland’s Uncharted is rapidly approaching and time will tell if it will be the start of a brand new film franchise or another failed attempt to adapt a video game property. The film itself has been in various stages of development for years before Tom Holland was attached to the project. Multiple directors were brought on to help the project including Bumblebee director Travis Knight who left the project in late 2019.

Eventually, Venom director Ruben Fleischer was brought on to helm the film and it has a lot to live up to. All four Uncharted games were critically well received and big hits for the developer noted for their great characters and compelling storylines. One big aspect of the character, however, has notably been changed for the character of Nathan Drake.

In the video games, Nathan Drake, even in the first game, is presented as a veteran treasure hunter. It’s made very clear early on that this game wasn’t his first adventure. Tom Holland’s version of Nathan Drake, however, is clearly a bit newer to the business. While speaking to Comicbook.com, Ruben Fleischer spoke about these differences and how they affected the character:

“Well, Nathan Drake in the game is somebody who’s been at this treasure hunting thing for a long time. Whereas, our character, he’s an unassuming bartender who has a love for history, but, other than that, really no experience out there in the world, fighting, shooting, jumping off of planes, all the things that he learns how to do. So, I think that the naiveté that Tom brings to the character is warranted because he’s not this veteran guy. He’s a guy who just yesterday was tending bar and then just got thrust into these extreme circumstances. So, what I love is that, for fans of the game, they get to see a different chapter in Nate’s life and see how he would go through these experiences which would lead him to become the Nathan Drake that they know and love.”

You can read the synopsis here:

“Uncharted introduces audiences to street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and showcases his first treasure-hunting adventure with wisecracking partner Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg). Inspired by the acclaimed video game series, this action-adventure epic spans the globe and follows Nate and Sully as they embark on the dangerous pursuit of ‘the greatest treasure never found’ while also tracking clues that may lead to Nate’s long-lost brother.”

Directed by Reuben Fleischer from a script written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Rafe Judkins, Uncharted is being produced by Sony PlayStation Productions, with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan producing alongside Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad.

Uncharted will be released in theaters and IMAX on February 18th, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
