During an interview with Gamespot, Venom director Ruben Fleischer addressed a major plot hole in the Sony film.

During the film, the Riot symbiote escapes the custody of the Life Foundation and makes its way to a marketplace in Malaysia, killing several people and later bonding with an old woman. After conveying that Riot intends to head to the Life Foundation’s headquarters in San Franciso, the film cuts to Eddie Brock as he steals confidential information from his fiance Anne Weying’s laptop and subsequently uses it confront Dr. Carlton Drake. The film then jumps six months later to when Eddie Brock has suffered the personal and professional consequences of his actions, though we eventually see that the Riot symbiote is still attached to the same host and has only just arrived at the airport.

Because the film clarifies that only the most compatible hosts won’t be used up when bonded with a symbiote, fans were left wondering how Riot could remain attached to the same person for half a year and why it took him six months to reach his destination. When asked about this plot hole and what Riot was doing during those six months, director Ruben Fleischer explained:

“Yeah, that’s a good question. That’s one of our few–hopefully–few logic bumps. But we had to have a passage of time in order to show Eddie’s downfall, and that was the one thing that doesn’t entirely track. But I like to think that old lady was going around murdering all throughout Malaysia, and she was just having a good old time just shooting shards through different people in Malaysia.”

Venom follows Eddie Brock as he attempts to revive his journalism career by investigating the Life Foundation only to come into with an alien symbiote that bonds with him, granting him powers and transforming him into the titular anti-hero.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.

Venom will be released in theaters on October 5, 2018.
