Sony’s upcoming Venom film currently in production with Tom Hardy playing the titular anti-hero, but fans still have a few questions about the project including whether or not Spider-Man exists in the same universe. In an interview with MTV News, producer Matthew Tolmach discussed the possibility of seeing the wall-crawler appear in the film and commended Tom Hardy for his performance as Eddie Brock.
When asked if the film would be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or a different Spider-Man universe, Tolmach offered a vague response:
“We are making a Venom movie is what I’m going to say. We’re making a Venom movie with Tom Hardy and I think you will be very pleased.”
Tolmach was then asked if Spider-Man was present in the Venom film universe and the producer reiterated his previous comment:
“We are making a Venom movie and I’m excited for people to explore and figure out what that is.”
Tolmach praised Tom Hardy’s performance as the titular anti-hero and discussed what the actor brings to the role:
“Eddie Brock is an incredible character and a gritty, real, authentic, funny but also embittered character and a truth-teller who has made mistakes. You know, Tom… it’s like a master class watching him act every day and he’s such a risk taker and he loved this character. From the day that we first met with him, my partner Avi Arad and I… we found someone who just believed in this character entirely and yet every day pushes it to a place that us mere mortals would never expect it go. He just has crazy integrity about it and so he challenges everything we’re doing in the most brilliant way. For him, it’s like, ‘if I’m going to do this, I’m going to do it and give it it’s due.’ Because the love that the fans have for that character is profound and he shares it. So, it’s really exciting.”
When asked if the film would be aiming for a PG-13 or R rating, Tolmach replied:
“We’re gonna do the right one.”
Plot details on the film are currently under wraps, though director Ruben Fleischer revealed that the film will be based on the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes comic book runs.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Venom also stars Michelle Williams, Scott Haze, Jenny Slate, Riz Ahmed with Woody Harrelson reportedly in talks to join the project. Are you excited to hear that the Venom film will be based on these stories? Share your thoughts below!
Venom is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on October 5, 2018.

5 Ways Venom Could Show Up In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Even before Sony lent Spider-Man to Marvel Studios, there was talk about Sony doing their own spin-off films focusing on characters they owned, including both heroes and villains. The end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 even teased a possible Sinister Six film. Many thought that Venom, one of Spider Man’s most popular villains, would also get his own film. Although he appeared in Sam Rami’s Spider-Man 3, Venom was less than well received. If anyone could use a character redemption, it was Eddie Brock.
Those hopes seemed to dash after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was deemed a failure and Sony’s future with the Spider-Man character seemed uncertain. It seemed as if the movie gods smiled on fans as Sony worked out a partnership with Marvel Studios, which allowed Spider-Man to appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Spider-Man’s first appearance in the MCU was in Captain America: Civil War and actor Tom Holland’s performance as the wall-crawler was universally praised.
But Sony’s not done doing their own thing. It was announced that a movie featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat was in the works. It was then revealed that Tom Hardy is attached to play Venom in another project. Marvel Studios has previously said that these projects would be based at Sony and exist outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Amy Pascal recently said that the Silver Sable and Black Cat film, as well as Venom, are set within the same universe as Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Did she let something slip, or was this wishful thinking on her part? Either way, that led us here at Heroic Hollywood to think of ways that Venom could be incorporated into and show up in the MCU. Click Next to take a look…
