Venom: Let There Be Carnage scribe Kelly Marcel broke her silence on the film’s groundbreaking post-credits scene.
Major spoilers ahead for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Fans seated for opening weekend screenings of Venom: Let There Be Carnage were surprised to find out that the post-credits sequence teased Tom Hardy’s symbiote crossing over with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. The scene showed Eddie Brock lying low in a hotel room. After Venom reveals that he’s been hiding key information from Eddie, a huge ball of light fills the screen, and the hotel rumbles. By the time the light disappears, Venom and Eddie are in a visibly different hotel room, with the television now showing J. Jonah Jameson’s report revealing Spider-Man’s identity to the world.
The Venom post-credits scene left more questions than answers, with many wondering just how the symbiote will be folded into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a recent interview with Discussing Film, Let There Be Carnage writer Kelly Marcel opened up about the sequence, though she remained mum regarding concrete details.
“For me, they have such a great canon. I just could talk about these characters all day long. They’re so fun! We don’t know if there will be another Venom movie after this one, but should they move forward with another one, obviously, I would love to see him interacting with all kinds of villains within the Marvel Universe. I know Tom would like to do some crossover too. So who knows!”
“There hasn’t really been any talk about that and it’s really a studio decision and not one that we make. But I think it would be really fun if the studio here decided to start mixing up a bit.”
Let There Be Carnage has done absolute gangbusters at the box office, besting the first film’s opening weekend cume. It’s safe to say that it’s in Sony’s best interests to continue the franchise, especially after fans warmed up to the sequel even more than the character’s cinematic debut. As for when Venom will duke it out with Spidey? Only time well. The multiverse is set to open up in spades with Spider-Man: No Way Home, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the symbiote appeared, let alone was teased in the threequel.
Here is the synopsis for Venom: Let There Be Carnage:
“After finding a host body in investigative reporter Eddie Brock, the alien symbiote must face a new enemy, Carnage, the alter ego of serial killer Cletus Kasady.”
Directed by Andy Serkis from a script written by Kelly Marcel, the film stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Reid Scott, Stephen Graham and Woody Harrelson.
