Venom is already breaking records by earning the biggest preview night for a movie released in October.
The anti-hero origin story seems to be polarizing the fans and critics who have seen it but one opinion that seems common amongst the differing reviews is that the movie is fun, whether it’s intentional or unintentional. The mixed word of mouth hasn’t stopped the film’s box office run, which began with Thursday night previews last night. According to Variety, Venom earned $10 million on Thursday night from 3,543 theaters across the United States.
The opening may not exactly be Avengers: Infinity War numbers, it’s even slightly below the $15 million earned by Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Thursday previews but not by much. Plus, it’s still the highest preview night gross for an October release and that’s nothing to scoff at. The film is now said to be on track for a strong opening weekend of between $55-$70 million. The cast and crew of Venom have discussed possible sequels down the line in various interviews, even a run-in with Spider-Man, and if the Thursday night previews are any indication audiences may get to see more of Tom Hardy’s Venom on the big screen after all.
Some fans may have laughed at the idea of a solo movie for the character without any trace of Spider-Man in it, but it seems that the opening weekend is looking bright for Sony’s anti-hero origin film. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Venom as more information becomes available. Are you looking forward to the film?
