‘Venom’ Director Reveals Why The White Spider Chest Emblem Is Missing

Venom Tom Hardy Wonder Woman

When Sony Pictures announced that a standalone Venom movie would be coming to the big screen with Academy Award-nominee Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, many were left wondering how the design of the beloved character would turn out if Spider-Man wouldn’t be involved.

Those questions became even more prominent when more footage was released, showing Venom with a mostly-accurate depiction onscreen with one noticeable absence: the iconic white spider emblem on his chest. Given that this version of the character’s origin doesn’t involve Spider-Man, many are curious as to why the team behind the film settled on a certain new design without the white spider emblem.

Recently, director Ruben Fleischer explained the process in which the final design was settled on and also revealed why there is no white spider emblem:

“The most challenging thing, obviously, was to figure out what to put on his chest to replace the spider since we couldn’t use the spider in our film. We went through a million iterations before we landed on the sort of pattern of veins that he has in the movie.”

Fleischer also explained the approach in the film’s official design.

“For me I was always just driven by the comics, just wanted to be as true as possible. In arriving at the design of him I worked closely with a 3-D modeler and we had tons of references from the comics that I pulled panels to get his posture, his scale, his size, his mass and then obviously the iconic mouth, and eyes, and tongue. That was super important.”
