The Fast & Furious franchise shows no signs of slowing down with this year’s The Fate of the Furious earning more than $1.2 billion worldwide. A lot of that success comes down to the popularity of the main cast, especially action star Vin Diesel, who was the top-grossing actor of 2017.
According to Forbes, Vin Diesel managed to race past his co-star Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson this year with global ticketing receipts of $1.6 billion. In addition to The Fate of the Furious, Diesel also starred in the surprise hit xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, which had a global total of $346 million and no doubt helped Diesel to reach the top spot for this past year.
Speaking of Dwayne Johnson, the wrestler-turned-actor came in second place for 2017 with $1.5 billion. Sadly, his star power wasn’t enough to rescue Baywatch from becoming a massive box-office disappointment. With Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle still in theaters, it is still possible for Johnson to overtake Vin Diesel if that film continues to attract movie-going audiences in the coming weeks.
Third place honors went to Gal Gadot, who starred in both Wonder Woman and Justice League this year, for a total of $1.4 billion. Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega also had a year to remember, with their films earning $1.08 billion and $815 million, respectively.
