We don’t know when, how or where, but we know we’ll be seeing Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk (also known as the Kingpin) again. While promoting his upcoming film The Magnificent Seven, D’Onofrio spoke to LRM about his role in the Marvel/Netflix shows. D’Onofrio was able to confirm that unlike most actors who join the MCU, he has no multi-picture (in this case season) deal with the company. However, both him and Marvel are a big fan of his character (as are most of the people who’ve watched the show), and D’Onofrio is more than willing to play him again at every opportunity.
“Marvel, the company, and especially Jeff Loeb, who runs Marvel Television, he’s a clever dude. All those people over there are pretty clever and they love talent. There’s no giant commitment for me at Daredevil. Like I didn’t have to sign my life away at all. When Jeff tells me there’s something coming up and if I’m available, I’ll be there. And because it’s written so well, I’m going to show up. I’m going to do everything I can because the writing is so good. And then there’s a company like Netflix and they’re not pressuring you either. They just want good material, good content. They give you money to make good content, so they’re not pressuring actors to sign their life away either…. I think that there’s this common ground where they say, ‘Look, if the material is good are you going to show up?’ and I said, ‘Definitely’.”
So basically, as long as the scripts are good D’Onofrio will keep coming back. Talk about a win/win. When the actor was asked directly about what’s in store for his complex character when he returns, D’Onofrio had this to say:
“That I can’t answer. I do know, but I can’t answer… so take that how you will. Jeff and Charlie (Cox) and Netflix love Kingpin, and so, Kingpin is good for Marvel’s television stuff and I think they agree.”
Judging from the mention of Daredevil actor Cox in that statement, it seems likely we might not see Fisk again until Daredevil season 3. However, most fans of Fisk and the Netflix/Marvel shows in general are expecting to see the Kingpin of crime in The Defenders team-up series. When the character actually returns is yet to be seen, so for now all we can do is speculate.
You can next return to the Marvel/Netflix universe when Luke Cage drops Friday September 30th on Netflix. Until then, you can get your fix of Fisk by streaming Daredevil season’s 1 and 2 now, or alternatively you can recapture your love for Mike Coulter’s Luke Cage by streaming Jessica Jones, both of which are also available on Netflix.
