Vincent D’Onofrio Doubts The Kingpin Will Appear In The MCU

Vincent D'Onofrio Daredevil Kingpin Hawkeye MCU

Since the introduction of Spider-Man into the MCU in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, many Marvel fans have hoped for Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk — A.K.A The Kingpin —  to crossover onto the big screen in order to face off against the web-slinger himself.

Vincent D’Onofrio recently spoke to DigitalSpy when he was asked about the chances of The Kingpin appearing in the MCU. Based off of his response, it sounds unlikely it will happen, at least in the current phase of the cinematic universe:

“I would love to switch over to the movies, but I think it’s pretty much been said it’s not going to happen. Or at least not for a very, very long time. I think [Marvel Studios boss] Kevin Feige explained that, and that’s what makes the most sense, he said the film universe is too jam-packed. It’s hard enough already, and if they keep bringing big characters in that they have to service in the writing, it’s not gonna work. They’re trying to figure out already how to individualise more and at the same time keep The Avengers going.”

Not only would the prospect of bringing Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin into the MCU overload the universe, but it would also present a logistical nightmare and risk a serious tonal clash. Marvel has established the Netflix corner as a place to explore darker, more mature themes. Whereas the films remain to be safe popcorn flicks that are a guaranteed success at the box office due to their wide appeal. Introducing a compelling villain into the MCU doesn’t exactly seem to be a priority for Feige either.

While we obviously have both the perfect Kingpin, as well as the perfect Spider-Man, these two iterations facing off against one another doesn’t necessarily guarantee a slam dunk. The Kingpin is one of the most iconic villains for both Spider-Man and Daredevil but Vincent D’Onofrios Fisk would probably be better served if he were to face off against an older version of Spider-Man. One that can go toe to toe with the crime boss not just physically, but mentally as well. It also wouldn’t make sense at this time in the story for Fisk to pull his attention away from his unfinished business with Daredevil, the man who put him behind bars and ripped him away from the love of his life, Vanessa.

Could Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin pop up again before Daredevil season 3 (rumored for a 2018 release)? Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher all get their first seasons this year. Do you think we’ll see Wilson Fisk in one of them? Sound off in the comments?
