‘Walking Dead’ Actor Cites Carl’s Death For Andrew Lincoln’s Departure

In a recent interview, The Walking Dead actor Tom Payne cited the death of Carl as a reason for Andrew Lincoln’s choice to leave the show.

During the interview Payne, who plays Jesus on the show, cited that there weren’t to many directions to go with Rick after the death of Carl:

I think when Carl died last year and Chandler left, I think that was a moment for him of: ‘OK, where does this leave Rick? And how does he move forward?’ I think that was a pause for thought.

It is an idea worth considering. So much of Rick’s characterization revolved around protecting and raising his son. Without that essential element in the mix, it’s hard to imagine how they could possibly move his character forward. Carl was revealed to have been bitten by a walker during the mid-season finale of the show’s last season. He died the following episode and was not well received by fans or critics.

Andrew Lincoln, however, has been very vocal about why he has decided to leave the show. The actor has made no secret of the fact that he wanted to leave The Walking Dead to spend more time with his family for whom the filming had been very difficult on. Payne seemed to completely respect this fact:

As far as Andy goes, I’m completely with him on the fact that he needs to spend some more time with his family. He had just had a baby when the show got picked up.

He’s in Atlanta for eight months out of the year – for eight years, now. So that’s tough on anyone, and I completely agree with decision to concentrate on his family for now. And I would do the same.

Andrew Lincoln, however, is not completely done with the show. His character is expected to leave the show during the next season’s mid-finale. How the creative team will go about doing this, however, is currently unknown. Lincoln has expressed a desire to return to the production and direct at least one episode of the show sometime next year. When and if he does this, however, is currently unknown.
