‘The Walking Dead’ Teases Upcoming Death As Well As New Characters Coming

With San Diego Comic-Con starting this weekend, we know that we will be getting some new news for AMC’s The Walking Dead.  Following SDCC tradition, we can expect a Hall H panel with the cast and producers as well as a trailer for the upcoming season seven of the show.  We still don’t know who will be on the receiving end of Negan’s barbwire baseball bat “Lucille” and we probably won’t know that until the season premiere this fall.  Meanwhile, that hasn’t stopped The Walking Dead’s Twitter account from teasing us who that specific victim could possibly be.

Showing each of the cast members as one of Lucille’s potential victim further reminds us that at any moment, someone can bite the dust on this show. Come the season seven premiere, one of these people is sure to go.

At the same time we are losing a cast member, we will possibly be gaining a new one or even more than one. Executive Producer Greg Nicotero sat with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the upcoming season, fan gripes about the finale, as well as what’s to come in the upcoming season. When discussing the season six finale, he explains that story-wise it’s better to have the death in the beginning because who it is, it will have a lasting impact on the main characters.

“It’s a much different story because we’re opening a different chapter, and one thing you’ve got to think about is this death changes who our characters are and propels them in a different direction. That’s one of the reasons why we felt that having the death in the premiere episode was warranted. Yeah, it’s a cliffhanger and I get that people were anxious and excited about knowing what happened, and seeing where it goes with the story, but the truth of the matter is, that death propels our story forward, and has a direct effect on people. And that’s why you really want it to be the anchor point of our season 7 as opposed to the parting moment of season 6, and then sort of starting already partially into our story.”

He comments on how the show will continue to evolve and there’s a promise of a larger world for season seven. This also includes new characters. We’ve already been introduced to the Hilltop and The Saviors, but we only got a glimpse of The Kingdom towards the end of the season six finale. Fans believe that we will possibly get to see comic book fan-favorite King Ezekiel and his pet tiger Shiva in the upcoming episode. While Nicotero remains tight-lipped as to if that will happen he does offer some small bits of details.

“I think it’s safe to say that we’re going to get a chance to meet a lot of new people.”
