In what may be a bold move, Warner Bros. might be gearing up to bring Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker to the Venice Film Festival.

While nothing has been confirmed, a report from Deadline has indicated that Warner Bros. may be sending Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker film to the Venice Film Festival. Warner Bros. will not be featuring Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker at SDCC in favor of a more prestigious crowd for the fall.  The centerpiece for this will, in all likelihood, be the Venice Film Festival.

Footage for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker film has already been met with high praise due to the footage Warner Bros. released at CinemaCon in April and CineEurope in June. If they were going for the Venice Film Festival it is likely that Warner Bros. may be pushing for an Oscar run for the film. However, we’ll just have to wait until Venice Film Festival announces its line up on July 25!

What do you all make of this? Could Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker film be a solid entry to the Venice Film Festival? Is Warner Bros. making the right choice in skipping SDCC? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Here is a plot synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker film:

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.

The Venice Film Festival begins on August 28th.
