Warner Bros. Animation has released the first official trailer for the much-anticipated two-part Watchmen animated movie, following its announcement last year at San Diego Comic-Con alongside plans for other adaptations such as Crisis on Infinite Earths. The sneak peek provides fans with a glimpse of what to expect from this new take on the iconic comic book series.
The Watchmen adaptation was further detailed during a panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market, where it was confirmed that the movie will be rendered in CG animation. The first installment of the two-part series is set to release later this year (reportedly in August), with the conclusion scheduled for 2025.
Watchmen’s history with adaptations
Originally a comic book limited series created by the British team of writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins, Watchmen was first published by DC Comics in 1986-1987. It quickly became a seminal work, praised for its complex story and deep themes, leading to its compilation in a single-volume edition shortly after its initial release.
The Watchmen universe has seen various adaptations and expansions over the years, including a 2009 feature film directed by Zack Snyder and several comic sequels and prequels, such as Before Watchmen and Doomsday Clock. The HBO series adaptation of Watchmen, created by Damon Lindelof, was met with critical acclaim and hailed as one of the best comic book adaptations in recent memory.
Despite the expansion of the Watchmen universe into the broader world, original creator Alan Moore has famously distanced himself from these adaptations. He has expressed dissatisfaction with the uses of the work he co-created.
