Wendy Williams is stirring up a considerable amount of controversy after commenting on Joker star Joaquin Phoenix’s lip, which she referred to as a cleft lip.
During Wendy William’s post Golden Globes episode where she discussed the events of the night, she mentioned how she finds Joker star Joaquin Phoenix attractive. Wendy Williams didn’t just stop there, as she went on to discuss the various ways she find Joaquin Phoenix to be attractive.
While discussing her attraction towards the Joker star, Wendy Williams mentioned how when Joaquin Phoenix shaves his facial hair, he has a fractured hairline, something similar to a cleft lip. Wendy Williams then lifted up her lip to show her perceived image of Joaquin Phoenix’s cleft lip. In actuality, Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that the scar in question was a nonsurgical scar he was born with, as opposed to a scar from cleft surgery.
Many found Wendy Williams’ cleft lip comment regarding the Joker star to be cruel and mocking, which led to a barrage of tweets against her and in support of Joaquin Phoenix. Many people online, including Canadian football player Adam Bighill, asked Wendy Williams to issue an apology for her comments.
You can check out Wendy Williams’ apology to the cleft lip community below, as well as to Adam Bighill, whose son suffers from cleft lip. In the apology, Wendy Williams also promises to donate to Operation Smile and ACPA Cleft, two organizations that help fund research towards and treat cleft lip.
. @Bighill44 We’re thinking about Beau today as he is in surgery. I want to apologize to the cleft community and in Beau’s honor, our show is donating to @operationsmile and @AmerCleftPalate and encourage our Wendy Watchers to learn more and help support the cleft community.

The controversy even caused Cher to speak out, and it turns out the superstar wasn’t a fan of Wendy Williams’ apology and insult towards Joaquin Phoenix. Cher has been a known volunteer for the Children’s Craniofacial Association, another organization that helps those affected by cleft lip. Cher took to Twitter to specifically showcase how Wendy Williams mocked Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, which you can check out below.

Currently, Joaquin Phoenix hasn’t responded to Wendy Williams’ comments, and it’s hard to image that he will. Joaquin Phoenix is in the running to scoop up as many awards as he can for Joker, which was a critical and commercial beast. In fact, Joker stunned earlier this week with a whopping eleven Oscar nominations.
