What If…? writer A.C. Bradley has revealed why The Time Variant Authority from Loki won’t be appearing in the series.

Of the many revelations found in Loki, the most interesting one that affects the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to be The Time Variant Authority. An omniscient organization that exists outside of space and time, the TVA’s sole purpose is to regulate time and to ensure that no diverging timelines are created. Essentially, they have to ensure that everyone stays on their predetermined path. It’s a fascinating concept that will most likely be explored in future MCU projects like Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but don’t expect the cosmic operation to show up in What If…?, the next show from Marvel.

What If…?, the first animated series from Marvel, is set to explore hypothetical scenarios, storylines, and character arcs that could have potentially existed within the MCU. Seeing as the animated series’ shtick is detailing diverting events within the franchise, it makes sense that The Time Variant Authority would step in and prune all the hypothetical timelines. Well, in a recent interview with io9, What If…? writer A.C. Bradley discussed why The Time Variant Authority doesn’t just step in and stop the timelines from diverging.

“We were already deep in development and writing the show by the time Loki got up and running. So we had a meeting and talked about what we wanted to do with the multiverse – kind of as an aside – because Doctor Strange 2 was still in the very early stages.

“Basically I was like, OK, ‘I’m just going to go and show all the fun we can have in the multiverse. I’m going to show all the things that can happen and the places we can go, I’m not going to lay down any serious rules, I’m not going to touch anything to do with the TVA.”

Bringing The TVA into What If…? could easily complicate the series, especially one that’s meant to just be a fun, hypothetical look into the MCU. It seems like Bradley and the studio made the right choice by not bogging themselves down with The Time Variant Authority and all of their pesky rules and hatred of free will.

Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ What If…?:
