Will Smith revealed why he wasn’t in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and if he is eager to return as Deadshot.

The Suicide Squad featured a few members from David Ayer’s film, such as Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Rick Flag, and Amanda Waller. However, one major absence from the DC film was Will Smith’s Deadshot.

When Idris Elba first joined The Suicide Squad, many believed he was replacing Will Smith as Deadshot. Instead, Elba played Bloodsport in the sequel. Smith revealed in a recent GQ video why he wasn’t in the James Gunn film and whether or not he’s open to playing Deadshot again in the future.

“Yeah, I was working and they were ready to shoot. It was a timing issue. They left Deadshot out, right? So Idris is playing a different character or is he playing Deadshot? All right, cool, so I can come back.”

The first movie followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto as The Joker. However, James Gunn delivered a fresh take on the team with his movie, which premiered this past August.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is out now in theatres and HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Will Smith’s potential future as Deadshot, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
