Warner Bros. Not Moving Forward With ‘Wonder Twins’ Movie

Wonder Twin power, deactivate!

Wonder Twins HBO Max Black Adam Adam Sztykiel

Warner Bros. is reportedly no longer developing a Wonder Twins film for HBO Max.

In February, it was revealed that Warner Bros. was working on a Wonder Twins film for HBO Max with Black Adam‘s Adam Sztykiel on board to write and direct. Last month, it was then reported that the DC film would star K.J. Apa and Isabel May, with filming starting in July.

As Warner Bros. heads in a new direction under CEO David Zaslav, Warner Bros. is shelving the Wonder Twins project. The Hashtag Show was the first to report on the film’s cancellation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zaslav is “imposing a mandate that DC movies should now be made with a theatrical-first goal” and the project was “too niche.”

Another THR source shared Wonder Twins was also deactivated because the project’s $75 million budget was too high for HBO Max, with Zaslav looking to keep film budgets for streaming under $35 million.

A New Era For DC

Before Zaslav took over Warner Bros., the studio was developing a few DC films specifically for HBO Max beyond Wonder Twins. While Blue Beetle will now get a theatrical release, Batgirl and Black Canary are still slated for streaming at the moment. There are also rumors that DC might become a separate production entity similar to Marvel Studios under Disney.

Here is the synopsis for DC’s next live-action film, Black Adam:

Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods – and imprisoned just as quickly – Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, DC’s Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, James Cusati-Moyer, and Bodhi Sabongui are also on board in undisclosed roles. Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions are producing the movie with Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon serves as an executive producer.

Black Adam will hit theaters on October 21, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the future of DC, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
