A new report claims that Wonder Woman 1984 may have some trouble locking a release date in China.
Over the years, China has become a profitable place for movies, especially Hollywood blockbusters. The Star Wars films aren’t huge there but recent films like Ant-Man and the Wasp and especially Aquaman earned big numbers in China. Aquaman opened in China before anywhere else and it worked to the film’s advantage quite a bit, breaking many records in the country before even opening in the United States.
Unfortunately, it seems that Wonder Woman 1984 may not have that luxury. The upcoming sequel to the 2017 smash hit Wonder Woman is set to release in 2020 and features a story that ties in heavily to the events of the Cold War, much how the first film set its story to the backdrop of World War I. A new report recently appeared on Twitter from Gavin Feng which revealed that some insiders are worried that politics could play a big part in Wonder Woman 1984 not getting released in China. Check out the Tweet below to get the full report.
Some insiders believe trade war has impacted Hollywood business in China. Universal still don’t receive any response about First Man’s censorship. Many believe it’s because COLD WAR background story. Some even worry about Wonder Woman 1984.

As stated above, the Cold War connection in Damien Chazelle’s First Man reportedly hurt its chance of earning a release in China. Given that Wonder Woman 1984 will be tackling the same topic, in a very different way, it appears that even the iconic Amazonian warrior could have trouble locking a release date. It wouldn’t be the first time a superhero movie was denied a China release though. Both Deadpool films failed to pass Chinese censorship for an official release.
