Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has confirmed that Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah won’t be having a romance.
Warner Bros. and DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 is expected to be a rich addition to the Wonder Woman mythos as the film is set to bring back Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, who died at the end of the last film. Trevor, of course, is the character who taught Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince how to love and live, inspiring her to become a part of something larger. Fans were shocked to find out that Trevor would be returning for the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel, which is set in 1984, decades after the first film’s World War I setting. With Diana Prince’s romance back in tow, director Patty Jenkins has shut down the fan theory that suggests that Prince would be engaging in a romantic relation with Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Ann Minerva, a.k.a. the villainous Cheetah.
In the latest issue of SFX, the Wonder Woman 1984 director revealed that she’s seen some fans speculate that Gal Gadot’s Diana and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah would be in a romance of sorts, especially because both of them become friends. In the trailer, the duo can be seen grabbing drinks and enjoying each other’s company, which led to the speculation that there might be some romance involved between the two. While Patty Jenkins did shut down the fan theory, she also suggested that she was thinking about having a romance between the two.
“It might have [happened] in a different storyline. But because this storyline was so clearly about Steve (Trevor, played by Chris Pine) coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve. There wasn’t room for two for Diana.”
Steve Trevor coming back is a major deal, especially because Wonder Woman seems to have loved him for decades. Even in 2017’s Justice League, the Gal Gadot character is still reminiscing about her relationship with Trevor. At this point, we’re not exactly sure how Trevor managed to return to the Wonder Woman sequel, but it seems certain that he’ll be Diana Prince’s only love interest.
