Please be warned that there are spoilers below about the casting of Ares in Wonder Woman.
Ares was confirmed as the villain in Wonder Woman back in January. Now, Batman-News is reporting that Ares will be played by Harry Potter actor David Thewlis.
The character hasn’t appeared in any of the previous Wonder Woman trailers and so it’s not clear whether the studio is still working on his special effects (he’s going to be mostly CGI) or whether they just wanted to keep it a surprise. Regardless, David Thewlis is a great and seasoned actor and someone who will play a villain nicely.
Thewlis was credited as one of the actors in the film, but prior to this news, we didn’t know who he would be playing.
Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.
Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Lucy Davis as Etta Candy, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Lisa Loven Kongsli as Menalippe, along with Danny Huston, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya and David Thewlis.
