Wonder Woman producer Charles Roven has offered his thoughts on how Diana differs from other DC and Marvel superheroes.
In exactly one month, Warner Bros. will introduce the world to the first ever female-led superhero film that will play a crucial role in determining the future of female-led blockbusters in the entertainment industry.
The film set during World War I follows Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) after Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), an air force officer crash lands on the island of Themyscira — the home of the Amazons — and informs them of the great war going on in the outside world. Diana finds herself compelled to live up to her sacred duty to defend the world and enter the conflict as she believes can help bring an end to the war.
In an interview with Sci-Fi Now, Roven explained the biggest different between the superheroine and the most popular male superheroes of today is that Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) goes against the reluctant hero archetype as she has desired to be a hero for most of her life:
“If you look at Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and Iron Man, none of them started out going, ‘I’m going to be a protector. I’m going to be a great warrior. I’m going to fulfill my destiny because I want to emulate the people I grew up hearing stories about, what they did for people, what they did for mankind, what they did for the people they were protecting when they couldn’t protect themselves. They may grow into that role or reluctantly accept that role. They may even try to run from that before they get pulled into it.”
Roven went on to explain that Diana’s desire to be a superhero from the beginning is what stands her apart from other popular superheroes:
“But I think Wonder Woman is the only one who starts out saying: ‘That’s my destiny and I’m going to pursue it and nothing is going to stop me from doing it, not even my mother…’ I think her dynamic as a character, the way that she’s insistent on making sure her destiny is one she makes for herself. I think that defines her also as being a very different kind of superhero.”
The film stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as General Antiope, Connie Nielson as Queen Hippolyta, Lisa Loven Kongsli as Menalippe, Danny Huston as General Erich Ludendorff, David Thewlis as Sir Patrick Morgan, Elena Anaya as Doctor Maru, Ewen Bremner as Charlie, Saïd Taghmaoui as Sameer and Eugene Brave Rock as the Chief. Here’s the official synopsis:
’Wonder Woman’ hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.
